University of Kansas Cancer Center Membership

Researchers and clinicians associated with the University of Kansas, its Medical Center, and affiliated organizations are eligible to be considered for membership in the University of Kansas Cancer Center. All areas of cancer research are encouraged including basic, translational, and clinical research, pharmaceutical sciences, population sciences, and behavior and psychosocial science. Affiliated research organizations include: the Stowers Institute for Medical Research, Kansas City University for Medicine and Bioscience, Children’s Mercy Hospitals & Clinics.

Membership Categories

The following membership categories and requirements were developed under the guidance of the National Cancer Institute (NCI):

Full: Researchers and clinicians with faculty appointments at one of the University of Kansas campuses and actively involved in cancer-related basic, translational, and/or clinical research as evidenced by being an investigator on peer-reviewed cancer-related grants or contracts within the last three years; or a principal investigator of peer-reviewed investigator-initiated cancer-related clinical trials within the last three years and the primary, secondary or senior author of peer-reviewed cancer-related publications within the last three years.

Associate:  Researchers and clinicians with faculty appointments at one of the University of Kansas campuses who are engaged in cancer-focused research and clinical practice as evidenced by publications and/or grants, but do not have peer-reviewed cancer-related funding within the last three years.

Affiliate:  Researchers and clinicians associated with institutions outside of the KU system and hold an adjunct or volunteer faculty position at the University of Kansas or its Medical Center and who demonstrate a commitment to cancer research and/or clinical activities and the research, education and patient care mission of the University of Kansas Cancer Center.

Key Collaborator: Researchers and clinicians associated with the University of Kansas or its Medical Center who are interested in developing and contributing to cancer-related research, clinical trials in collaboration with Full Members, but do not currently meet the requirements of the Full or Associate membership categories.  Faculty appointments are not required for Key Collaborators.

Application Review

Cancer Center membership is reviewed by the Membership Committee and makes recommendations to Roy Jensen, MD, director, on the appropriate membership category and research program placement. 

Responsibilities of Membership

Cancer Center members are expected to actively participate in the research and/or clinical trials programs, serve on Cancer Center committees, attend Cancer Center-sponsored meetings and seminars, and cite their Cancer Center affiliation on grants, publications, presentations, etc.  Members must submit all clinical cancer studies to the KMCRI’s Protocol Review and Monitoring Committee for scientific review.  Members conducting clinical trials are encouraged to utilize the resources of the Clinical Trials Office. 

Benefits of Membership

Members have a number centralized resources to support collaborative research and clinical trials.  All members may access the following resources, with a few restrictions based on membership category.

  • Shared Resources —Biospecimen, Biostatistics/Informatics, Biotechnology Innovation & Optimization, Clinical Trials, Drug Discovery & Development Project Management, Flow Cytometry, and High Throughput Screening

  •  Pilot Project Funding— Competition for pilot funding for cancer-related research projects. (Associate, Affiliate and Key Collaborator Members may submit pilot project applications when collaborating with a Full Member).  Contact Susan Harp at sharp@kumc.edu; 913-588-4786.
  • Clinical Trials Office Support for developing and managing clinical trials.

  • Cancer Center Seminars and Symposiums — Cancer Center sponsored programs throughout the year.
  • Research Programs — Cancer Center members are assigned to one of five research programs: Cancer Control & Population Health, Cancer Prevention & Survivorship, Drug Discovery & Experimental Therapeutics, Metabolic & Inflammatory Risk Factors, or Transcriptional & Chromosomal Regulation.
  • Disease Working Groups — Cancer Center members may participate in any of the seven groups:
    Brain; Breast; Gastrointestinal; Genitourinary; Head & Neck; Hematological Malignancies; and Lung.
