William Jewell, MD has over 45 years of experience in the cancer
field, primarily as a surgical oncologist. Dr. Jewell is
a pioneer in advancing new cancer treatments throughout his 35-year
career at the University of Kansas Medical Center. In the
1970’s hew was one of the first surgeons in the country
to study the effectiveness of a lumpectomy and radiation vs.
the standard of care at that time, a modified radical mastectomy.
Background
Dr. Jewell was born in Evanston, Illinois and earned
his bachelor’s
degree from the University of Illinois. Dr. Jewell went
on to obtain his medical degree from the University of Illinois
College of Medicine in 1961. His postdoctoral training
took place at the University of Illinois Research and Educational
Hospital.
In 1962, Jewell joined the faculty of the University of Illinois
College of Medicine where he worked in the surgery department
for four years. Jewell left in 1968 to join the faculty
of the University of Kentucky Medical Center where he served
as the director of Surgical Oncology for three years. During
this time, Jewell also had a clinic at the US Veteran Hospital
in Huntington and Beckley, West Virginia. In 1971, Jewell
joined the University of Kansas Medical Center’s team as
the Chief of Surgical Oncology, where he served for 26 years.
University of Kansas Cancer Center
Jewell served as the first
director of the University of Kansas Cancer Center, then called
the Kansas Cancer Institute from 1995-2004. Jewell retired
from his practice in surgical oncology in Jan. 2007, and now
focuses on the educational program for KUCC.
